Privacy Policy — thingsushouldknow.com

Effective date: 3 December 2025
Owner / Data Controller: Syed Mohsin Ali Shah
Site platform: WordPress • Jurisdictions referenced: UK, USA, EU, Pakistan

1. Overview — what this policy covers

This Privacy Policy explains how thingsushouldknow.com (“the Site”) collects, uses, and shares personal data when you visit or interact with the Site. It applies to all visitors, commenters, newsletter subscribers, and users of the Site and covers data collected by the Site itself and by third-party services we use (for example Google services and plugin providers).

2. What personal data we collect

We collect different categories of personal data depending on how you interact with the Site:

  • Technical & usage data (automatically collected) — IP address, device and browser information, operating system, referring pages, pages visited, timestamps and other server logs produced by WordPress and the site host.
  • User-provided data — name, email and message provided via contact forms; comment data (name, email, website, comment body); newsletter signup details if you opt in.
  • Advertising & analytics identifiers — cookies, advertising IDs, and other identifiers used by analytics and ad providers (for example Google) when those services are active.

3. How and why we use your data (purposes & lawful bases)

We use personal data to operate and improve the Site, respond to messages, moderate comments, and, where you consent, to send newsletters or marketing communications. When required by law or where applicable, we rely on consent (for example for personalized advertising and analytics in certain regions) and otherwise on legitimate interests to operate the Site and keep it secure.

4. Advertising, Google AdSense & Google services

Intentions & current status: The Site intends to use Google AdSense for advertising. At the time of publishing this policy the Site does not currently serve ads. When ads are enabled, third-party vendors — including Google — may collect information about your visits to serve and measure ads.

Google Analytics: We use Google Analytics (GA4) to understand how the Site is used. Analytics collects usage data and may use cookies and identifiers. We will configure Analytics to respect consent choices where required, and provide options to anonymize IP addresses when applicable.

Google Search Console: We use Google Search Console to monitor indexing and performance of the Site in Google Search. Search Console is a webmaster tool and does not change the Site’s public handling of visitor personal data; however we disclose its use here for transparency.

5. Cookies & similar technologies

We and our service providers use cookies and similar technologies for site functionality, analytics, and (when enabled) advertising. Cookies are classified as:

  • Strictly necessary — required for the Site to function (e.g., session cookies for login or comment posting).
  • Functional — remember preferences you set (language, display preferences).
  • Analytics / Performance — collect anonymized usage data (Google Analytics).
  • Advertising / Targeting — used by ad providers to deliver personalized ads when that feature is active (Google AdSense and partners).

Cookie table (typical plugins / services)

Note: Exact cookie names and durations depend on the services and plugins you (or we) enable. We will install a consent management plugin (CMP) before serving personalized ads to EEA/UK users and will block non-essential cookies until consent is given.

To manage cookies you may use your browser settings (blocking or deleting cookies) or opt-out tools provided by providers (for example Google Ads Settings and industry opt-out mechanisms such as YourAdChoices).

6. Data sharing and disclosures

We may share personal data with:

  • Service providers — hosting providers, analytics, email and newsletter services, and plugin providers that perform services on our behalf.
  • Ad partners and ad tech vendors — to deliver and measure ads once advertising is enabled. Those vendors (including Google) may act as independent controllers for their purposes.
  • Legal requests — if required by law, court order, or to protect rights, we may disclose data to authorities or other parties.
  • Business transfers — in the event of a sale, merger, or acquisition, personal data may be transferred as an asset.

We do not sell personal information as defined under the CCPA. If this changes we will provide a clear means to opt out and will update this policy.

7. Data retention

We retain personal data only for as long as necessary to provide services, comply with legal obligations, resolve disputes, and enforce agreements. Typical retention periods used by the Site:

  • Server logs: 6 months (default)
  • Analytics data: 14 months (typical for Google Analytics)
  • Comment/post data: retained while the comment/post remains published unless you request deletion

If you want data deleted sooner, contact us (details below) and we will process requests according to applicable law.

8. Your rights (GDPR / CCPA / other)

If you are in the EU/UK you have rights including access, correction, erasure, restriction of processing, data portability, and to object to certain processing. You may withdraw consent at any time where processing is based on consent.

If you are in California you have rights under the CCPA/CPRA including the right to know what categories of personal information we collect, access to specific pieces of personal information, deletion (with some exceptions), and the right to opt out of the sale of personal information. As stated above, the Site does not sell personal information.

To exercise any of these rights, contact us using the contact details in the next section. We will verify requests and respond within the timeframes required by applicable law.

9. Security

We use technical and organizational measures to protect data (HTTPS/SSL, updates to WordPress and plugins, access controls). However, no system is completely secure; we cannot guarantee absolute security.

10. Children

The Site is not directed to children under the age required by local law (typically 13 or 16). We do not knowingly collect personal data from children. If you believe a child has provided personal data on the Site, contact us and we will remove it.
